Brazilian Samba comes to Rowan

Brazilian Carnival Music was celebrated at Rowan this week, as Year 5 were taught how to play Rio-style Samba by Raul from Inspire Works. The girls were fascinated to hear about the highly extravagant parades that take place in the Sambadrome in Rio de Janeiro, a purpose-built route that can hold up to 90,000 spectators. After practising some Portuguese and gaining an understanding of how the different instruments are played, it was time to put their own rhythmic skills to the test. The large Surdo provided the ‘heart beat’ of the music, and girls on the Repenique, quickly mastered the response call. With the Tamborims, Agogos and Ganzas, the Rowan Samba Band could be heard throughout the school.

The girls has tremendous fun and felt they experienced the thrill of playing as an ensemble.
